Why is exploring body image important?

How we feel about ourselves and our bodies shapes our self-esteem as well as how we interact with others and the world around us. For this reason it is important to explore how we have come to feel the way we do about ourselves and create the opportunity to challenge and transform any limiting self-beliefs.

Why is the workshop aimed at 12-15 year old girls?

As they search to discover who they are, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the unconscious persuasion from society, media and peers of what makes one more beautiful, more acceptable. At this age their feelings and scrutiny about their developing bodies, how they see others and how they imagine they are being perceived can intensify. Comparison, judgment and body shaming can lead to an unhealthy body-image which may have a lasting impact on self-confidence.

In what way can participants hope to benefit?

The aim of the workshop is to educate and facilitate a felt-sense of self-value and body-acceptance, giving the girls life-long resources to begin building a healthy relationship with themselves and their bodies. Our ambition is that the girls will emerge from the group with the foundations on which to continue to develop being comfortable in their bodies and as such, more comfortable in the world.

Group Facilitators

Jenni de Knoop

I have been working in the field of adolescent mental health, body image and eating disorders for over 11 years at the Priory Hospital, Roehampton, as well as in private practice. Initially I trained as a contemporary dancer where my special interest in how a person constructs and experiences their unique body image began. Drawing from my personal and professional experience, I understand how feeling unhappy with parts of our bodies can limit our experience of ourselves and of life around us. Creating a healthy relationship with your body is fundamental to living a healthy life, and I am passionate in supporting girls and women to reach for greater body acceptance and to embrace their self-worth.

Michelle Bosman

Having worked in the NHS and for the last 7 years as a therapist and clinical lead in a children’s charity, low self-worth and a lack of self-love were common themes for the young people and families I came into contact with. In my personal and professional life I have witnessed and experienced the damage of these crippling self beliefs and I am working towards changing it. Through training as a yoga teacher and practising Movement Medicine, I have gained greater embodiment and alignment which I believe is fundamental for living a connected existence and engaging fully with life.
